EEP Projects

The Gaia Carbon Sciences Partnership is busy with a project for the Energy and Environment Partnership Programme with Southern and Eastern Africa [EEP S&EA] entitled: “Regional Agricultural Development: Biomass and Food Crop Cultivation for Electricity Generation, Biochar Production and Food Security” in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania.  The EEP S&EA is funded by the Governments of Finland,United Kingdom and Austria and hosted by the Development Bank of Southern Africa [DBSA]. The project entails the selection of regions in the countries which, after a process of information gathering will be subjected to a systems thinking based methodology with a number of outcomes:
  • The potential impact of additional electricity/energy generated from biomass on socioeconomic development in a region will be highlighted.
  • The increased and sustainable cultivation and use of biomass crops and their impact on socioeconomic development in a region will be highlighted.
  • The increased and sustainable cultivation and use of food crops and their impact on socioeconomic development in a region will be highlighted.
  • Practices to enhance soil health and fertility with concomitant increase in productivity, benefitting biomass and food crop production in a region, will be emphasized.
  • The increase generation of electricity/energy in energy-poor regions and its impact on socioeconomic development in a region will be emphasized.
  • The combined impact of these interventions on food security in each region will be qualified and quantified.
  • The combined impact of these interventions on socioeconomic resilience in each region will be qualified and quantified.
  • Feasibility studies for the regions will be produced which could be turned into bankable documents for presentation to potential funders and investors to provide the capital for the necessary interventions.
  • The regional projects, when considered together, will comprise a development model which could be replicated in other regions in Eastern and Southern Africa and also the African Continent.
